Stella Donnelly’s third album, Love and Fortune, released in November 2025 via Dot Dash Recordings, marks a poignant evolution in the Welsh-Australian singer-songwriter’s career. Following a period of burnout after touring her 2022 album Flood, Donnelly stepped away from the spotlight, even taking jobs at a cemetery and bakery. This hiatus birthed an introspective record centered on the raw pain of a fractured friendship—a breakup as devastating as any romantic split. Themes of loss, self-doubt, resentment, and tentative renewal permeate the 11 tracks, transforming personal grief into universal resonance.

Musically, Love and Fortune embraces minimalism, stripping back to ethereal vocals, gentle piano, and sparse guitars that allow Donnelly’s crystalline voice and sharp lyricism to shine. Gone are the jangly hooks of her debut Beware of the Dogs; instead, we get hymnal intimacy, evoking a wistful midwinter stillness.  Tracks like “Standing Ovation” swell from understated beginnings to subtle jubilation, while “Feel It Change” maps love’s quiet decline with prickling tension between acoustic and electric elements.  “Baths,” a vocals-only vignette, spills fragmented emotions, and “Year of Trouble” builds to a panicked crescendo, repeating the haunting refrain of isolation.

Donnelly’s wit remains, laced with vulnerability—lines like “I try to heal but I’ve become the arrow” in “Ghosts” cut deep.  The album isn’t bitter; it’s a compassionate autopsy, finding beauty in impermanence. While some may miss the catchier energy of her earlier work, this subdued approach yields her most honest, expressive output yet.  Clocking in at around 35 minutes, it’s a mellow masterpiece that rewards patient listens, earning widespread acclaim with an average Metacritic score of 79.

In a year of bold indie releases, Love and Fortune stands out for its quiet power, reminding us that healing often whispers rather than shouts.
